Language holds a lot of power.
It confines. It liberates.
It creates connections. It sparks revolutions.
It fuels creativity. It stifles innovation.
It unites us. It divides us.
It fosters understanding. It breeds prejudice.
It celebrates diversity. It enforces conformity.
It empowers voices. It silences dissent.
It tells stories. It distorts the truth.
It heals us. It inflicts pain.
Just like people, language is fluid and ever-changing.
In truth, I struggled to identify the language I wanted to use to define the professional development clients I work with. I understand the power of language. It has been used both to cut me down and as a powerful tool in building me back up. I aim to make intelligent, inclusive, and intentional choices. I acknowledge that I may not always find the perfect language, even on behalf of my own communities. Nevertheless, I am on a continuous learning journey, and when I approach my work humbly, my hope is to be offered grace.
So Why Women+?
Women+ is the language I use to identify my premier coaching client base. Women+ face exorbitant limitations in the workplace and have historically been (and continue to be) locked out of leadership opportunities. Women+, inclusive of different identities related to gender - Cis women, trans women, genderfluid folks, femmes, the list goes on! - have the power to change the world when given the resources, opportunity, access, and power to do so. My contributions to developing the leadership skills of people in the workplace will always prioritize the experiences of women+.
What about everybody else?
Does it seem like it's my vibe to exclude people? Nah! Come one, come all. Women+ will be centered in my framework, but really, anybody who has been underrepresented in the workplace, and especially those who have experienced gender-based bias, are likely to feel right at home working with me.
